The Sandbox Project innovatively combines physical interactions with virtual reality (VR), using a large sandbox, a Microsoft Kinect sensor, and Unity software, to create a dynamic, user-generated terrain for VR gaming.

Virtual reality has revolutionized the gaming landscape, offering immersive experiences that transcend physical boundaries. However, most VR experiences remain confined to pre-designed digital environments. The Sandbox Project aims to change this by providing an interactive platform that allows users to mold their own virtual landscapes, effectively integrating tangible, real-world interactions with a high-tech virtual environment.

Challenge

Creating an interface that seamlessly merges physical interactions with a VR environment posed numerous challenges. How can one capture changes in the physical environment and translate them into the digital world in real-time? How can this dynamic terrain be made interactive, allowing users to drive a virtual car with a real steering wheel?


Solution

My contribution to the Sandbox Project was a rewarding experience. My role involved preparing and setting up the hardware, ensuring that the physical components were seamlessly integrated with the digital aspects of the project. The data collected was processed through a Unity-based software, skillfully developed by Paulo Salvatore, who transformed it into a dynamic virtual terrain. Lastly, the incorporation of a real steering wheel and VR goggles enabled users to navigate through their self-crafted landscapes. This project highlighted the potential of combining physical manipulation with VR technology, emphasizing the future promise of user-generated content in gaming.

The Sandbox Project is a unique endeavor that merges physical interactions with the immersive world of VR.
